Respite care is short-term professional home care that steps in so a family caregiver can step out: for an afternoon, a weekend, a vacation, or a few weeks of recovery. Your loved one keeps their routine at home with a trained caregiver, and you get something you have probably gone too long without. Rest.
Havenwood Care provides respite care throughout Hartford County from our office in Farmington. We are locally owned and Connecticut licensed (DCP HCA #0002903). This page is written for the person doing the caregiving, because if you are reading it, that person is probably you.
Or call us. We will explain your options and exact pricing in one conversation.
Family caregivers provide enormous, mostly invisible labor, and most run themselves down before asking for help. Caregiver burnout is not a character flaw; it is the predictable result of a job with no shifts, no weekends, and no backup. Respite care exists to be that backup.
You cannot remember your last full day off, or your last full night of sleep
Your own doctor's appointments keep getting cancelled
You have a wedding, a trip, a work obligation, or a surgery coming up and no coverage plan
You are becoming irritable with the person you love, and you hate it
Siblings help "when they can," which means it is all on you
You know you need a break but the guilt talks you out of it every time
Say the last one out loud to us and we will tell you what we tell every family: taking a break is not abandoning your loved one. It is what makes it possible to keep going. The caregivers who last are the ones who rest.
A standing weekly break: Tuesday afternoons are yours, every week, guaranteed.
Errands, appointments, or simply a day that belongs to you.
Sleep through the night while a caregiver handles the 2 a.m. wake-ups.
We cover Friday to Sunday so you can actually leave town.
One to several weeks of full coverage, including live-in or 24-hour care if your loved one needs around-the-clock support.
You cannot care for someone else while recovering yourself. We bridge the gap.
Whatever the format, we follow your playbook. Before care begins, we document routines, medications, meals, preferences, and the small things only you know. Your loved one's days stay familiar, and you get updates so you can actually relax instead of checking your phone.
Respite care includes whatever level of support your loved one normally receives from you:
Respite is billed at the level of care your loved one needs, using the same published rates as our ongoing care:
| Care Level | Starting Rate |
|---|---|
| Companion-level respite (4+ hour visits) | From $34/hour |
| Personal care respite (4+ hour shifts) | From $39/hour |
| 12-hour shifts (personal care) | From $26/hour ($312 per shift) |
| Live-in respite (multi-day coverage) | From $359/day |
Rates are starting points, confirmed in your first phone call. Short 2 to 3 hour visits are available at a higher hourly rate, and multi-day or vacation-length coverage is often most economical as live-in care. Tell us the dates and the level of care, and we will quote the whole thing in one conversation.
Most families pay respite privately. Long-term care insurance policies frequently cover respite; we help you verify benefits and provide the documentation your insurer requires. Connecticut programs such as the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders (CHCPE) include respite support for eligible families, and the state's Aging and Disability Services network can point to additional caregiver support programs. We can help you understand what may apply.
Routines, preferences, and the details only you know get documented before we start, so your loved one's day stays familiar.
You choose how often you hear from us. Many families want a simple end-of-day note; some want a midday text. Either way, you will not be guessing.
Based in Farmington, not a franchise call center. The person who plans your coverage answers your calls.

Many families use respite as a low-commitment way to see how home care fits. If it goes well and you want regular help, the same plan and often the same caregiver continue seamlessly.
