Companion Care for Seniors
in Connecticut

Companion care is non-medical home care focused on connection: conversation, shared meals, activities, errands, and outings with a caregiver matched to your loved one's personality and interests. It is the right level of care for seniors who are largely independent but spending too much of their week alone.

Havenwood Care provides companion care throughout Hartford County from our office in Farmington. We are locally owned and Connecticut licensed (DCP HCA #0002903), and we take the "companion" part literally: we match caregivers to clients by personality, language, and interests, because a companion who does not click is just a stranger in the house.

Why It Matters

Loneliness Is a Health Problem, Not Just a Feeling

Isolation does measurable damage to seniors. Research links chronic loneliness to higher rates of depression, faster cognitive decline, worse sleep, poorer nutrition, and more hospitalizations. The pattern is familiar to almost every family we talk to: Dad gave up driving, the neighborhood friends moved or passed, the kids live an hour away, and a social week shrank to a phone call and a doctor's appointment.

Companion care interrupts that slide. A few visits a week restores structure, conversation, activity, and something underrated: plans to look forward to.

Is This the Right Fit?

When Companion Care Is the Right Fit

They live alone, and the days have gotten quiet. Widowed or single seniors whose social world has contracted, especially after giving up driving.

Family lives far away, or works full-time. You call every day, but calls do not fill an afternoon. A companion gives you eyes in the home and gives your parent real company.

They are independent, but you are starting to worry. Companion care is the gentlest entry into home care. No hands-on help, no loss of independence, just presence, and a professional who will notice early if something changes.

Early memory changes are showing. For early-stage dementia, routine, conversation, and engagement are genuinely protective, and a consistent companion becomes a familiar anchor.

After a loss. The months after losing a spouse are when isolation sets in hardest. A companion helps rebuild a rhythm.

What's Included

What Our Companion Caregivers Do

Conversation, shared meals, and genuine company
Games, puzzles, hobbies, and activities your loved one actually enjoys
Walks and light exercise encouragement
Errands together: groceries, pharmacy, the post office
Outings: coffee, the library, church, the senior center, a drive
Light meal preparation and tidying during visits
Appointment accompaniment
Medication reminders
A daily check on wellbeing, mood, and safety, reported back to your family

Matching is the whole game in companion care. Before placement, we learn your loved one's interests, background, language, sense of humor, and routines, and we select a caregiver accordingly. A retired teacher who loves crosswords gets a companion who will actually do the crossword. You approve the match before care begins, and if it is ever not right, tell us once and we change it.

Getting out of the house is half the value of companionship, and it is where we can do something most agencies cannot. Through our affiliated transportation company, we arrange wheelchair-accessible transportation for appointments and outings, with the companion riding along. Giving up driving does not have to mean giving up going places.

Transparent Rates

What Companion Care Costs in Connecticut

Most agencies make you sit through a sales visit to hear a price. Here are ours:

Shift LengthRate
2 to 3 hour visitsFrom $65/hour
4+ hour shiftsFrom $34/hour
8-hour shiftsFrom $30/hour ($240 per shift)

Rates are starting points and apply to companion-level care; visits that include hands-on personal care are quoted at our personal care rates. Extended shifts beyond 8 hours are quoted individually, and for all-day or overnight needs, 24-hour care or live-in care is usually the better structure. We confirm your exact rate in your first phone call, before any home visit. A 10-hour weekly minimum applies to hourly care. Most companion care clients start with two to three visits per week.

Paying for care

Most families pay privately. If your loved one has long-term care insurance, we work with it: we help you verify what the policy covers and provide the documentation your insurer requires for reimbursement. Connecticut programs such as the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders (CHCPE) help eligible seniors pay for care at home; we can help you understand whether your loved one may qualify.

FAQ

Companion Care Questions

Companion caregivers provide social support and practical everyday help: conversation, meals together, activities and hobbies, walks, errands, outings, appointment accompaniment, light meal preparation, and medication reminders. They also serve as your family's regular eyes on your loved one's wellbeing.
Companion care is social and practical support without hands-on physical assistance. Personal care adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility. Many clients start with companion care and add personal care later as needs change, with the same agency and often the same caregiver.
With Havenwood Care, companion care starts at $34 per hour for visits of four hours or more, with shorter 2 to 3 hour visits from $65 per hour and 8-hour shifts from $30 per hour. A 10-hour weekly minimum applies. Most families start with two to three visits per week, and we confirm your exact rate in the first phone call.
This is the most common starting point, and it is exactly why companion care works. There is no "help" to resist: it is company, activities, and errands with a person your parent actually likes. Most reluctant parents warm to a well-matched companion within a few visits. The match is what matters, and we build it around your parent's personality.
Yes. Companions accompany clients to appointments, errands, and outings, and through our affiliated transportation company we can arrange wheelchair-accessible transportation, with the companion riding along.
Yes, often significantly. Routine, conversation, and engagement support cognitive health, and a consistent companion becomes a familiar, calming presence. If dementia progresses to the point of needing hands-on or overnight support, we will tell you plainly and adjust the plan toward personal care, 24-hour care, or live-in care.
Yes. Havenwood Care is a Connecticut-licensed homemaker-companion agency (DCP HCA #0002903), fully insured. You can verify our license anytime at elicense.ct.gov.
